The origins of basketball can be traced to Springfield, Massachusetts in 1891. Physical education teacher Dr. James Naismith created an indoor game that would provide an "athletic distraction" for a rowdy class through the harsh New England winter. A wooden peach basket was hung 10 feet above the gymnasium floor and players shot and dribbled with a soccer ball.

The sport of basketball evolved from its humble beginnings and quickly gained worldwide appeal. In the 1900s a true basketball was developed in a brown color to stand out to the crowd during play.

Produced in limited quantities by Leather Head Sports expert craftsman Paul Cunningham, this vintage styled basketball is hand-stitched from rich supple leather.
